They are the culling to symbology for characters that cannot or do non use spells. Special Arts rely on the ATK/STR stats and mostly crave MP to used. The bulk of Special Arts are offensive abilities meant to damage opponents but they sometimes can boost character attributes or fifty-fifty heal wounds.
Unlike symbology, special arts must be assigned to a button or they cannot exist used in boxing. All arts attach to range; depending on if the character is at brusque or long range, a different art may be used, or the art itself may change functionality to arrange the current range.

Star Ocean/Star Ocean: First Deviation
Special Arts were used by assigning them to the
and
buttons in 2 sets: short and long range. The amount of skill slots could be increased by using the Link Philharmonic personal skill. These slots were useless to symbologists.
Star Ocean: The Second Story/2nd Development
Known every bit Killer Moves in The Second Story, the amount of slots were reduced to two and assigned to either the
and
buttons. Most arts accomodated this by altering their effects based on range, assuasive a skilled player to control which version of an fine art would activate by keeping track of the altitude from their intended target. The Cancel ability was introduced, though it was based on chance depending on the skill's level. Proficiency was besides introduced, allowing characters to level special arts and symbology through steady usage.
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere
Special Arts are learned through leveling skills with Skill Points. Because of the semi-realtime nature of the battle system, all arts freeze time when activated.
Star Body of water: Till the Terminate of Time
Only called Boxing Skills, the corporeality of skill slots returns to iv in the style of the get-go Star Bounding main. Arts are assigned to the
and
buttons and adhere to the Major/Stiff and Minor/Weak variation characteristic introduced in this game. Equally indicated by the position names, assigning whichever button dictates the special arts' authorisation. Furthermore, for the first fourth dimension arts require either Striking Points (HP) or Magic Points (MP) and a set amount of Fury% to exist used; their cost depends on whether they have been ready every bit a Major or Small attack.
Boxing skills may deal HP damage, MP damage (accounting for the game's MP Death feature), or both. More often than not the impairment is calculated via the following formula:
- Failed to parse (syntax error): {\displaystyle (Character's ATK - Enemy DEF) × multiplier}
The proficiency system, at present known as Mastery, was refined. Every art that could exist improved had ten levels of mastery. The Accuse and Aerial arts are available to all playable characters. Back up skills requite additional furnishings when the grapheme uses the art they accept been assigned to.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
All characters can learn Special Arts with the exception of the symbologists Faize Sheifa Beleth, Myuria Tionysus and Sarah Jerand. The mastery system is altered then that the player spends SP to level each skill. This extends to field skills that are non used in gainsay.
